A report by the American Pew survey on social media 2024 habits found that YouTube and Facebook are the most used while Instagram has seen substantial growth.
According to a report, the survey found that YouTube and Facebook remain the most used social media platforms among adults in the world. At the same time, the survey showed a significant increase in the number of Instagram users.
According to the survey, YouTube and Facebook are the most used online platforms among adults with 83% and 68% usage rates respectively.
About 50% of the world’s adults use Instagram. Other platforms such as Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Snapchat have usage rates among US adults ranging from 27% to 35%.
This year’s report first asked about BeReal, a new photo-sharing app that has just a 3% usage rate among American adults.
The percentage of adults using Instagram has increased from 21% in 2021 to 33% currently. This growth rate for Instagram is higher than the more modest or steady growth rates seen for other social media platforms over the same period.

Age-related disparities in social media 2024 usage
If the survey is to be believed, there is a difference in the use of social media platforms among age groups. Adults under 30 were more likely than older adults to use Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.
For example, 78% of 18–29 year olds reported using Instagram, which is much higher than 15% of adults 65 and older. Snapchat and TikTok followed similar usage patterns, with younger adults showing higher rates.
In contrast, YouTube and Facebook had more consistent use across all age groups, although younger adults still displayed greater engagement on these platforms than older adults.
